Plush, savoury, fruity and herbal organic red with light peppery spice. Moreish!

Societa Agricola Ciù Ciù is run by brothers Massimiliano and Walter Bartolomei in the heart of the Marche, in Central Italy. They cultivate on an organic basis and are also keen that their wines are an authentic expression of their region. A beautiful, juicy blend of Montepulciano and Sangiovese from the Marche in Italy. Brightly coloured, with rose scented aromatics complimenting flavours of ripe strawberry, blueberry and white pepper.

Producer: Azienda Vitivinicola Ciù Ciù

Region/Country: Marche, Italy

Grape/s: Montepulciano, Sangiovese

Production Method: Organic viticulture. Stainless steel fermentation and maturation.

Style: Medium bodied, juicy with savoury core

Pairing Suggestion: Versatile, grilled meats, salads, pasta

Variety: Sangiovese

Profile: Sangiovese is Italy's most planted grape variety, and the most dominant in Central Italy where it is responsible for some of the world's classic wines. Sangiovese has a broad flavour spectrum, ranging through mulberries, prunes, spice, tobacco, sometimes leather and chestnuts with a tendency toward extreme savouriness rather than fruit sweetness. When yields are low, as they typically are in the Classico zones and Brunello, the wines produced show extreme concentration and great longevity. There are few better pleasures than a mature Sangiovese. As with Nebbiolo, it is rather unfortunate that Sangiovese has rarely been mastered outside of its traditional home.

Classic Regions: Chianti, Brunello, Marche, Emilia-Romagna (Italy), McLaren Vale (Australia)

Azienda Agricola Ciù Ciù

Ciù Ciù wines are the authentic expression of the company’s commitment and tradition, the result of research and quality in both the vineyard and in the cellar, but also of a natural wine-growing ecosystem of quality with a “terroir” (microclimate, soil and subsoil) that is unique and irreplaceable.

From The Natty Boy

A lovely organic estate in the Marche region of Italy's Adriatic coast that's been operating since the 1970's. The estate vineyards are blessed with decent altitude, meaning that even in the hot summer months they benefit from cooler nights, allowing the grapes to preserve their natural acidity and freshness. This is a blend of Sangiovese and Montepulciano, the two main varieties of Central Italy. Here the Sangiovese doesn't quite hit the ripeness peak of Chianti, so it makes it a nice tart foil for the deeper, more meaty Montepulciano. This is the perfect trattoria wine, I love it and the value it represents. So often I find Italian reds sitting around this price point to be too hard or too boring, but this is neither. Loads going on aromatically with red and blue fruits, a bit of coastal herb and some spicy notes flowing onto a palate with ample freshness but also ample fruit weight and really well balanced tannins. Just add pizza and you're in heaven.
