Variety: Nero d'Avola
Profile: The most widely planted grape variety in Sicily, and the most important in terms of volume. As the name suggests, Nero d'Avola produces intensely coloured wines, this intensity of colour being matched by deepness of fruit character. Typically it has high tannins and medium acidity, this is aided by plantings at higher elevations. Nero d'Avola can be made into dense and dark wine that is stored in oak barrels and suitable for ageing, or young and fresh wines. Younger wines show plum and juicy, red-fruit flavors, while more complex examples offer chocolate and dark raspberry flavours.
Classic Regions: Sicily (Italy), Australia, California (USA)
Cantine Rallo was founded in Marsala, on the westernmost promontory of Sicily, and is a successful integration between nature, technology and tradition. The majority of wines are produced with grapes from the estate's own vineyards.
From The Natty Boy
I think this has got to be the best value sustainably produced red out there. This is Nero d'Avola from Sicily. Farming is organic, and the vineyards are planted at altitude, which is crucial for preserving freshness and primary fruit flavours in warm growing climates. Nero d'Avola can give you some pretty juicy, almost jammy fruit character at times so it's nice to see so much lift and floral notes adding to the complexity of this wine. I drink this a bit chilled, and it has been bottled without fining or filtration, so you may get some haze if held up to a light. A wine for enjoying, without having to think too much about!
