Region/Country: Rioja, Spain
Grape/s: Tempranillo
Production Method: Sustainable farming and natural winemaking in stainless steel. Bottled with low sulphur
Style: Dry, medium bodied with juicy fruity flavours
Pairing Suggestion: Grilled meats, poultry, vegetable dishes
Variety: Tempranillo
Profile: Best known as the preeminent grape in red Rioja, and capable of extremely high quality elsewhere. Tempranillo has many local forms throughout Spain, with slight variations between cultivars grown in Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Toro. Typically the wines are deeply crimson in colour with suitably matched intensity of flavour and vegetal freshness. Elevated acidity and moderate tannins add structure, and Tempranillo is another variety which matches very well to oak maturation. In Rioja the flavours are sometimes covered by rich American oak character, however more producers are eschewing heavy oak and long maturation in favour of freshness.
Classic Regions: Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Toro (Spain)
Gonzalo Grijalba
Gran Cerdo means ‘Big Pig’ in Spanish, a reference to banks who denied Gonzalo loans when attempting to start his company. This operation is a breath of fresh air in Rioja. Farming is organic and biodynamic, and winemaking strictly minimal interventionist with no oak used and wines made in a fresh and fruit forward style. Some of the best value wines out there.
