Wine: BODEGA MARAÑONES Picarana Albillo 2018
Producer: Bodega Maranones
Region/Country: Madrid, Spain
Production Method: Organic. Fermentation on fine lees in older, large French oak.
Style: Textural and savoury with stone fruit character. Similar to Chardonnay.
Pairing Suggestion: White meats, grilled vegetables
Profile: A white Spanish variety which comes in a number of strains, grown all over Spain, with Albillo Real, predominantly grown around Madrid, being the highest in quality. It is a pale variety, with small berries and subtle floral character which produces wines of moderate acidity and viscosity. Producers often pick a proportion of grapes earlier to increase the acidity of wines, and the results can be amazing. With wines of intensity and minerality similar to top quality Chardonnay.
Classic Regions: Gredos, Sierra de Madrid (Spain)
Bodega Marañones is located in San Martín de Valdeiglesias, a sub-region of the Vinos de Madrid DO. Young winemaker Fernando ‘Fer’ Garcia has been heavily influenced by the biodynamic wines of the Loire and Burgundy, so it is no great surprise that his old vine Garnacha, Syrah and Albillo wines have a balanced freshness and sense of place. The wines are a pure expression of each variety and terroir. Undoubtedly one of Spain’s most talented up and coming winemakers.
