Blackcurrant and bell-pepper fruit. Fresh and vibrant Cabernet Franc from the Loire.
Straight Cabernet Franc from Anjou-Saumur. A delicately floral nose, with a hint of vegetal spice. The palate is svelte, with savoury grip and more bell pepper spice coming through, balanced by violet and blackcurrant fruit. Fresh and vibrant, this will surely cellar well too.
Producer: Clau de Nell
Region/Country: Anjou, Loire Valley, France
Grape/s: Cabernet Franc
Production Method: Organic and biodynamic viticulture. Wild fermentation in barrel prior to 18 month barrel maturation
Style: Vibrant and aromatic red with great length and structure
Pairing Suggestion: Red meats, game, poultry, grilled vegetables
Variety: Cabernet Franc
Profile: Far more subtle than Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc shows lovely fragrance and smooth texture making it very approachable in youth. It often displays a characteristic green pepper spiciness as well as leafy aromatics. It produces wines with lovely freshness, which perform very well with a slight chill. The best examples can be extremely long-lived, taking on vegetal, undergrowth character. Cabernet Franc is often an important part of classic Bordeaux blends.
Classic Regions: Loire Valley, Bordeaux (France), Australia, Bolgheri (Tuscany)
Clau de Nell
The vineyards at Clau de Nell have been cultivated biodynamically since 2000. All the grapes are hand harvested and 100% destemmed. Fermentation is carried out using indigenous yeasts in oak barrels with gentle punch downs. Minimal sulphur dioxide is used and the wines are bottled without fining or filtration on fruit days, according to the biodynamic calendar.
