I am in love with the wines of Chidaine. Pretty much as good as it gets for white wine. I could drink this every day.

One of the icons of the Loire, and indeed French winemaking. Chidaine produces consistency unheard of in these northerly climes, a true master of Chenin Blanc. This is bright and pure, showing a gentle substance at the start but in the middle it shows a fine phenolic depth, a wonderfully broad substance, with rich tangerine and orange fruit, as well as a delicious if rather fine-boned mineral and acid backbone.

Producer: Domaine François Chidaine

Region/Country: Montlous-Sur-Loire, Loire Valley, France

Grape/s: Chenin Blanc

Production Method: Organic and Biodynamic farming. Wild yeast ferment in tank, ageing in older oak.

Style: Bright and pure, with the faintest hint of RS. Amazingly textured and rich, yet with the ongoing impression of freshness and vitality.

Pairing Suggestion: Risotto, seafood, Japanese cuisine

Variety: Chenin Blanc

Profile: Chenin Blanc is one of the great white varieties, responsible for many of the outstanding, long-lived wines of the Loire Valley. Chenin has naturally high acidity, and a range of honeyed citrus and orchard fruit flavours. It is produced in a wide range of styles, from dry and austere, to firm and powerful, through to lusciously sweet due to botrytis. Most Chenin is produced simialr to top quality German whites, with fermentation in stainless steel or large old oak, no oak ageing and no malolactic fermentation. It is also the major variety for Loire Valley sparkling wines.

Classic Regions: Savennières, Quarts de Chaume, Vouvray (France), South Africa

Domaine François Chidaine

François Chidaine is one of the France’s most exciting white wine makers. The combination of outstanding vineyards sites, all managed biodynamically, ridiculously low yields and minimal intervention élevage help produce some of the world’s great dry and sweet styles of Chenin Blanc. “You have to look to the historical collections of regional leaders Foreau and Huet to find comparable consistently high quality, making it clear that Chidaine is one of the world's finest craftsmen in the medium of white wine, not to mention a continuing source of amazing value.” David Schildknecht
