Profile: Barbera, native to Piedmont in Northern Italy, has traditionally run second to Nebbiolo, and planted in lesser sites. It has enjoyed a resurgence of sorts in modern times, with producers paying more attention to this attractively fruited variety which produces wines of immediate drinkability as well as structure to age. It is often used in Langhe Rosso blends to add colour and flesh. High in acidity, it easily maintains freshness alongside its naturally high sugar ripeness. Some producers have begun maturaring Barbera in oak to add tannin structure to its framework.
Classic Regions: Barbera d'Alba, Barbera d'Asti, Piedmont (Italy)
G.D. Vajra
Aldo Vajra's wines are characterised by pristine flavours and clearly defined perfumes. Aldo has been gradually increasing the area under vine to 60 hectares, of which 10 are Nebbiolo for Barolo, located in such outstanding sites as Bricco delle Viole, Ravera, Fossati, La Volta, Coste di Vergne and Coste di Rose. A traditionalist, Aldo adheres to old-style winemaking methods, such as long barrel ageing in traditional botti.
