Domaine Gramenon employ organic and biodynamic practices in the vineyards, with a strong non-interventionist stance in the cellars. The wines are a true embodiment of the family which produces them, Michèle Aubèry originally working as a nurse focusing on natural remedy and her late husband Philippe always seeking to test the boundaries imposed by French appellation law. Son Maxime François now continues this minimal intervention tradition, and the wines are incredibly pure. La Sagesse is made from Grenache, grown on a mixture of sandy, stony and traditional Southern Rhone galet based soils. Sweet fruited yet extremely elegant, it shows fine, silky tannin structure and exceptional purity. A true delight.
Profile: Grenache is an extremely widely planted variety, very well suited to warmer climates, where it is commonly blended with the likes of Mourvedre, Cinsault, Syrah and Carignan. It grows as a bush vine, making it suited to drought conditions and helping to protect the fruit from sun and wind damage. Wines display vivid red colour and vibrant red fruit character alongside distinctive Mediterranean herb flavourings. With added ripeness Grenache can take on a more medicinal tinge and greatly concentrated, dried fruit flavours. There are many old vine plantings throughout the Southern Rhone and Australia, and the wines produced from these offer extremely good value for money.

They do not merely champion organic farming, but they incorporate the concept of sustainability into their daily lives by growing their own food and raising their own animals. That they take such gutsy risks as bottling old-vine fruit with so little sulphur, without fining or filtration, only demonstrates the lengths they will go to in order to highlight the freshness, purity, and intoxicating aromas of their small, rare production.
