The 2018 Gattinara Molsino emerges from a relatively warm, sunny spot on the estate at 400m in elevation. It presents myriad shades of dark cherry/plum fruit, sage, menthol, new leather and dark spices. Potent and virile in the glass, the Molsino possesses tremendous drive as it builds into a deep, beautifully resonant finish that is utterly captivating. It’s a remarkable effort for the first year in which Roberto and his team were in charge. The ambition is pretty clear. Molsino will soon be the Monfortino of Alto Piemonte. Nervi is a benchmark producer in Gattinara, and the proud owner of some of the most amazing parcels the appellation has to offer – an impressive 28.5 hectares of vineyards in total. It was founded in 1906, but several of the vineyards had belonged to the family since 1679. After building up the winery’s reputation over the years, in 2018 the family decided to sell it to Roberto Conterno, who jumped at the opportunity to get his hands on such an amazing stash of Nebbiolo. Roberto continues to apply the same precision and attention to detail he did at Giacomo Conterno, and the wines are testament to that. Traditional, pure and age-worthy, these bottles are banging. Seriously, banging.
