Variety: Pinot Noir
Profile: Known as the Heartbreak grape owing to its tumultuous nature in the vineyard. Pinot Noir is best suited to cooler regions, including most famously Burgundy in France where it produces the most sought after and expensive wines in the world. Thin skinned and early ripening, Pinot is a very transparent variety, capable of showing subtle differences in terroir and pronounced regional character. Flavours found in young Pinot include raspberries, strawberries, cherries and violets; with time these evolve into a bouquet often reminiscent of game, liquorice and autumnal undergrowth.

They fly under the radar compared to a lot of the Jura superstars but the pedigree is outstanding. She has worked closely with Jean Francois Ganevat, and now lives in the same village - there are definite similarities between their wines, and that's pretty much as high as praise can get. AS is the norm in this wonderful region (in the alps bordering France and Switzerland, really nice drive up into Arbois from Geneva if you ever get the chance) all farming is organic and the winemaking strictly natural, with no additions or adjustments. The Souspois vineyard was planted in 1947, not a bad effort considering the impact of the war in France and its rural communities. These are very old vines, with low yields which give an incredible mineral streak to the wines. This will be cloudy, and may be a bit stinky but that will go with air. The nose is so floral and inviting and the palate glides, almost floating. Jura Pinot is always more effeminate than close neighbour Burgundy for me, and I love it.
