The name is a mouthful but the wine simply glides. Tetramythos are located in the northern part of the Peloponnese which is the Peninsula that makes up SW Greece. It’s pretty wild here, and very mountainous with vineyards planted at a number of different altitudes and aspects in this place of extremes. There is a ski resort just up the road, which illustrates how cold it can get there, and we all know how warm and sunny the Med is in summer. This Natur range is a bit more experimental, and everything is done hands off, with small amounts of sulphur used. Mavro Kalavrytino is a rare native variety planted in these mountainous regions. It gives a wine with lovely fragrance and fruit presence but more moderate tannins when compared to the much more famous Xinomavro. The fruit begins fermentation spontaneously and soaks on the skins for a couple of weeks before pressing. Only the free run juice is used here, which is the lightest in extract and produces the freshest wines. It’s aged for 5 months in huge old oak tanks which allows a bit more softening of what tannins are present. This is so perfumed, with wild florals and Mediterranean garrigue which flows onto the palate. There’s much more fleshy red fruit present here with alpine acidic freshness cutting through. Super light, very food friendly.
